Shetland Arts’ week-long Summer Dance Intensives will give young people of upper primary (going into P7 this summer) and secondary school age the opportunity to explore a range of dance skills with Shetland-born dancer and choreographer Kathryn Spence. Participants will learn contemporary dance technique and use this to devise, create and edit a short dance film and choreograph a piece for the Dance Showcase on Friday 21st July. Kathryn will work collaboratively with participants to ensure all have ownership of the pieces created, using a combination of her choreography experience and ideas from participants. This is a great opportunity to get involved with the creative process and to have your ideas heard and put into dance.
The two intensives will work towards the needs and abilities of the participants, which is why we have split the blocks into beginner and intermediate levels. If you have previous experience, please attend the intermediate sessions. This will allow for the blocks to push participants where necessary, and the opportunity for the basics to be taught and expanded on in each week. We would recommend a younger age group (P7 and lower secondary) attend the beginner sessions, and older secondary attend the intermediate sessions
Beginners block: Monday 10th July – Friday 14th July, 10am – 4pm
Intermediate block: Monday 17th July – Friday 21st July, 10am – 4pm
The sessions will be very active, so participants should wear clothes that they can move comfortably in. Lunch will not be provided. Please note that you can only book the full week course, not individual days. Advance booking recommended – limited places available!
