The BIG Takeover, which takes place in Shetland over the weekend of Friday 14th – Sunday 16th September, is a “Signature” event in Scotland’s Year of Young People 2018 calendar and is supported by EventScotland, as part of their national programme of #YOYP2018 events.

The three day programme of over 80 events and activities, will offer something for all the family, and will showcase musical and drama performances, sports events, films, arts, writing, crafts and include a programme of street dance and circus workshops, foam parties, inflatable obstacle courses, laser tag, swimming at Clickimin, land zorbing, riding a Segway and many more activities, all developed by the talented young people of Shetland.

The events and activities will take place right across Lerwick – at Mareel, the Garrison Theatre, Islesburgh Community Centre, Shetland Library, Shetland Museum and Archives, Clickimin Leisure Complex, Gilbertson Park and the Jubilee Flower Park.

You are eligible for a membership if, on 14th September 2018, you are in Primary 1 and above.  Members gain access to a whole range of the events and activities over the weekend at no additional cost. Tickets will be required for events and performances with a limited capacity, but members can get their tickets at a later date without further charge from Shetland Arts Box Office.

Members will also be able to use the scheduled bus and ferry services in Shetland, at no further cost, with additional bus and ferry runs being planned for the weekend. More information on the additional transport services will be advertised on The BIG Takeover Website by the end of August https://www.thebigtakeover2018.com/.

In advance of the weekend, members will have to collect their membership wristbands to demonstrate that they are a member of The BIG Takeover, and are entitled to participate in the un-ticketed activities over the weekend and use the bus and ferry services without further charge.

Membership wristbands will be available for collection on Wednesday 12th September between 1.00pm – 2.00pm and 6.00pm – 8.00pm from the following locations:

  • Unst Leisure Centre
  • Yell Leisure Centre
  • Whalsay Leisure Centre
  • North Mainland Leisure Centre
  • West Mainland Leisure Centre
  • Clickimin Leisure Centre
  • South Mainland Pool
  • Scalloway Pool

If members can’t make it along on Wednesday 12th September 2018, they can still collect your wristbands from Mareel between 6.00pm - 8.00pm on Thursday 13th September and between 10.00am - 6.00pm on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th September 2018.

When collecting wristbands members will need to take identification and their membership purchase order number to ensure that they get the correct colour of wristbands for their age

The full programme for the weekend will be advertised on the Shetland Arts Box Office and The Big Takeover Website later in June. When the programme is advertised members will be able to order their tickets for the events that require one, subject to availability.

Non-members will also be able to buy tickets for the events with a limited capacity, but they won’t be able to take part in the open activities or use the public transport without charge. The only exception is pre-school children who are attending an event that is suitable for them, who can get their tickets and bus and ferry travel in Shetland free of charge.
