Dir Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, France/Belgium 2018, 1h42, Cert 15Cast: Matthias Schoenaerts, Jason Mitchell, Bruce Dern, Gideon Adlon, Connie Britton.
Matthias Schoenaerts gives a wonderfully subtle performance in this lyrical character study, based on a true story.
Roman Coleman is halfway through serving an 11-year sentence in a Nevada jail when he is selected to participate in a wild horse training programme as part of his state-mandated social rehabilitation. Under the watchful eye of Myles, who simultaneously serves as the programme’s head trainer and a father figure to the inmates, Roman is paired with a particularly difficult horse who mirrors his symptoms of aggression, fear and anxiety. As Roman struggles with his newfound responsibilities, he’s also painfully reminded of his tragic past.
